The onset of the Gold Rush in California in 1848 brought thousands of prospective people to the state, hastily setting up structures and settlements in short periods of time. Looking up at the massive redwood trees foresting Northern California, the gold prospectors must have thought they struck gold in terms of building material!

They built their houses, agricultural structures and furniture from the readily available redwood, and used it for much of the construction for the Transcontinental Railroad, a massive building project, which then acted as a conduit for more demand of redwood around the state and country. We’ve reclaimed our Stout’s Legacy Redwood from old fenceposts and other agricultural structures of old and refinished them for new design projects.

The heartwood of redwood is naturally resistant to insects and rot, which makes this wood an incredible material for outdoor building projects and structures, and its excellent ‘dimensional stability’ prevents it from shrinking and swelling as much as other wood. It is less likely to warp or split, which adds to redwood’s impressive longevity. The durability of redwood and resistance to rot allows for the reuse of this wood in fresh new building and design projects with an antique accent.

From modern, white-washed tones to more textured and weathered patinas, we offer a diversity of styles and finishes for all types of creative and custom design projects.

STOUT’S LEGACY REDWOOD

Named for the iconic grove of giants in Jedidiah State Park along the Northern California coast, our Stout’s Legacy reminds us of the importance of forest conservation for future generations. Stout’s Grove was under threat of being logged, when in 1929, Mrs. Clara Stout donated the 44-acre grove of old-growth redwoods to the Save-the-Redwoods League to preserve it. Stout’s Legacy celebrates the conservation efforts of those who saw the beauty and intrinsic value of these magnificent and ancient trees in a time when many were benefitting from the over-harvesting of natural resources.

Stout's Legacy is availble in a varietiy of finishes, including White-Washed, Antique, and Weathered. In our soft White-Washed and Gray finishes, the tones lighten for a muted, beach-inspired look. The texture of the grain is wonderfully present, as are surface & end checks and tight and/or missing knots. The natural color varies, adding interesting diversity, visually and texturally.

Anthology Woods Stout’s Weathered shows a more natural patina, and works in both rustic and modern settings, with the silvery sheen adding a soft texture. For a more rustic and deep texture, our Antique Stout’s Legacy exhibits more color variations, as the wood has been partially planed to reveal some the natural redwood tones beneath the surface.

Stout’s Legacy is available in standard mixed widths (4-1/2" & 6-1/2") and custom dimensions are also available. Stout’s Legacy is suggested for a variety of cladding, ceiling paneling and other custom applications.
