Reclaimed Spirit

The rich history of our forefathers can be felt through each plank of our Heritage Oak wood. Many Eastern farmers upon staking their claim would build and live in their barns first before building their homes. To them barns represented the farms income and where their livestock lived. In this region of the US, oak trees were the most common tree to be found, so this is why most barns in Eastern US were constructed of either red or white oak planks. The wood from an oak tree is strong and hard, with a high tannin content making it resistant to both insect and fungal attack. Despite their rich legacies and strong timber frames, so many of these structures have been left empty as new generations head to the city abandoning the old family farm.

The Transformation of reclaimed Red & White Oak Planks:

Watching the deconstruction of an old barn is both glorious and heart breaking. With just a small tug of a rope attached to a bulldozer or heavy-duty pickup truck, the whole structure comes crashing down to the ground. Once all the wood is all gathered, graded and sorted, we then meticulously de-nail and metal detect each piece of wood. Then we place them into a kiln to remove all the necessary moisture before the milling process begins. The boards are milled, surfaced and molded to have a tongue and groove profile. Each Heritage Oak board is individually handcrafted to showcase its unique characteristics. There are no two timbers alike; they each have their own unique knotholes, nail holes, saw marks, grain patterns and natural patina that reflects the history they have lived.
